Pre-hung doors are so much easier to install as compared to slab doors as their frame is already attached. In addition, pre-hung doors have a doorknob hole that is already cut whereas their door hinges are already mounted. To put it simply, pre-hung doors come in a package and are ready to install so the process will be a breeze. If you are looking to replace your door, here is how to measure an interior door so you know what you are doing.
Measuring the Rough Opening
Make sure that the door frame can fit into the rough opening. You want the rough opening to be a little bigger than the measurements of the pre-hung door. Remove any trim from the opening and measure the width between the studs in three areas: between the highest points in the opening, between the center points, and between the lowest points in the opening and take the smallest of the three measurements. Move on to measure the height of the opening from the lowest point to the highest point of the sill on the left and right and take the smallest of the measurements.
Calculating the Width of the Jamb
The width of the jamb needs to be measured which is also referred to as the wall thickness or the width of the frame. Measure the height and width of the old door and round up the measurements to the nearest inch. If you do not already have a door, most doors are roughly 6 x 8 feet with a width of 2 feet and 6 inches.
Figuring Out Your Door Swing
Figuring out your door swing can take some time. You need to determine whether a right-handed pre-hung door is what you need or a left-handed one will do the trick. Go to the hinge side of the frame and extend out your arm in the direction of the door that opens. If your left arm is extended, then a left-handed pre-hung door is what you need and vice versa.
Selecting Between Inswing and Outswing
Most interior doors swing inside but you can always decide on an outswing door if that is what you prefer and feel most comfortable with.
Knowing the Material
There are many types of materials for doors such as wood, MDF, metal, and others. Figure out which type of material best suits your personal preferences before you go shopping for a door.
Measuring Doorknob
Most pre-hung doors come with precut doorknob holes which can usually fit most door knobs of standard size. However, there are custom or vintage knobs that will not fit into the standard doorknob hole. It is advisable for you to get the doorknob first before buying a door to ensure that the doorknob hole can indeed accommodate your doorknob.
